Conical small pitcher with protruding lip and rope-turned curved handle. Scarlet pimpernel design hand painted by Celia Thaxter.

Inscription on bottom reads: Celia Thaxter. Painted for Frau Paine at Appledore Aug 2, 1878, while listening to Mr. Paine's beautiful sonata opus 24.

Given to Mary Elizabeth Paine. Handed down to Mary Grand, niece of Mary "Frau" Paine, John Knowles Paine's wife. John Knowles Paine was a noted pianist and founder of the music department at Harvard University.

Donated by Mary Elizabeth Grand, member of the Greeley family.
