White Earthenware pitcher with handle in oinochoe shape. Olive boughs hand painted by Celia Thaxter.
Greek Inscription translates to: for the sleepless eye of the Morian Zeus beholds it, and the greyeyed Athena
from Oedipus at Colonus by Sophocles. "it"= the grey-leafed olive, nurturer of children.
In an 1882 letter to Annie Fields Celia Thaxter wrote:
Yesterday I was able to paint an olive pitcher for Mr. Ware, and he sent me such a beautiful inscription in Greek to put on it, and that made me think of you...Do you know what it means? That my olive trees are the special care of Zeus, "watched by the eye of olive-guarding Jove and by gray-eyed Athena." Isn't it charming? And won't Alice Howe like it on her bowl?...

Inscription on bottom reads: Celia Thaxter. Painted for Frau Paine at Appledore Aug 2, 1878, while listening to Mr. Paine's beautiful sonata opus 24.
Given to Mary Elizabeth Paine. Handed down to Mary Grand, niece of Mary "Frau" Paine, John Knowles Paine's wife. John Knowles Paine was a noted pianist and founder of the music department at Harvard University.
Donated by Mary Elizabeth Grand, member of the Greeley family.

Anemone design probably inspired by Celia and Oscar's 1880-1881 trip to Europe.

Donated by Thomas and Joan Read in 2002. Vase was given to Thomas Read's great grandmother Elizabeth Coolidge Howe Folsom, and was passed down through his family, E.C.H. Folsom spent time at the Shoals and knew Celia Thaxter.
