Description

Bobby Wharem worked on the Isles of Shoals from 1946 – 1962, 17 years. He worked as the chief engineer and also as the winter keeper, alone on the island all winter.

This is a letter he wrote to Theo Nash, executive secretary of Star Island Corporation for many years.

Dear Mrs Nash,

Just a few lines to let you know every thing is fine out here and now I can hardly wait for April when Joanie will be and here to stay. I am learning a lot about married life that I never even gave a thought to before. (I guess I’ve been single too long) “But I’ll learn” In all my years out here I’ve never seen so many white owls, and they are really doing a job on the rats. Plus the cat that is running wild out here, The new Power plant makes a nice work shop. The only thing is there isn’t much light.
In that wind storm we had right after I was married the wind [ripped] one of the fire escape doors right of the hotel. The one on the N.W. end of the hotel. But I’ve got that fixed for the winter. Give my regards to every one
Yours Truly
Bob
